FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a laser?

The word laser is an acronym for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation".  The radiation generated by a laser is referred to as non-iodizing radiation, which is similar to the radiation generated by a light bulb or FM radio.  This is NOT to be confused with iodizing, or harmful radiation (e.g. x-rays, gamma rays, tanning booths) that can damage the cells of the body.

A laser is an advanced piece of equipment that creates a powerful--yet safe, focused beam of light.  Unlike a flashlight or a light bulb (which produce 'white light' that is scattered and composed of different colors, light waves and frequencies), laser is monochromatic (a single, precise frequency and color).  This single, precise beam of light can be used therapeutically to treat many cosmetic conditions (e.g. unwanted brown spots, tattoos, small spider veins, etc.)

Are laser treatments safe?

Yes.  Even though lasers may seem like a recent invention but the first working laser was actually built in 1960.  Today, thousands of cosmetic laser treatments are performed across North America every day.  Cosmetic laser treatments such as the IPL photo facial light treatment and laser tattoo removal have been in use for many years with an excellent safety record.  To minimize the risk of unwanted side effects, be sure to inform your laser practitioner about recent sun tanning and medication history.

Is there more then one type of laser?

YES.  Like automobiles, lasers are manufactured by many different companies.  The technology is often very similar, but the brand names differ (e.g. Alma, Candela, Syneron, Lumenis, Cynosure).  Lasers are grouped by wavelength and function.  For example, a 755 nm laser wavelength is good for hair removal, but NOT for tattoo removal (which requires 1064 nm or 530 nm).  Different cosmetic conditions are treated by different lasers.  Your laser practitioner will help you choose the appropriate laser for your cosmetic condition.

How many laser treatments does it take to remove a tattoo?

Most professional tattoos require 8, or more, individual laser treatments to remove.  Home made tattoos often require less.

Will the tattoo be gone after laser treatments are completed?

With time, most tattoos can be removed.  Some ink colors are more stubborn then others, but we have removed virtually all colors in the past.

Will the laser scar my skin?

Avoiding prolonged sun exposure for 3-4 weeks prior to your laser treatments greatly reduces the risk of unwanted skin changes.  Although the risk of scarring is small when proper procedures are followed, it is still not zero.

How do I remove unwanted brown spots and sun damage from my skin?

The photo facial light treatment is a proven, safe and effective skin rejuvenation treatment.  It offers significant improvement for your skin's color and tone.  Using the power of therapeutic light the photo facial treatment fades or removes unwanted brown and red pigment from your skin.  In addition, the deep penetrating therapeutic light stimulates new collagen growth which reduces age lines.  The photo facial light treatment can be used on the face, neck, chest, hands and body.
